    Educating illegal immigrants too costly

Re editorial of Dec. 13 on illegal immigrants:

Your editorial on illegal immigrants favors lax enforcement of immigration laws. Does The Sun News also feel its readership should be able to pick and choose which laws they will obey, or is your editor the only one entitled to this outrageous position?

You state that housing costs would rise if the going wage were higher, hence illegals are a blessing by accepting low wages.

Most educated people have come to the conclusion that South Carolina's position as a low-income state has got to change if the state is to get in line and compete with other states.

The cost of illegal immigration is not the panacea you proclaim. While citizens may save a buck on their new house or restaurant tab, who picks up the tab for educating all the illegals' children?

You fail to point out that the children born in this country automatically are citizens. Hence, it is the American citizen who is taxed with the cost of educating illegals' children.

The low wages of illegals are usually paid under the table and not taxed. If the wages are taxed, the bulk of the minimal tax goes to the federal government and not the states.

In 2004, the U.S. Accounting Office estimated the per-pupil expenditure for illegal immigrants' children was $6,000. In North Carolina, the estimate was $8,500.

The Washington, D.C.-based Pew Hispanic Center examined North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia because of their pronounced Hispanic population increases in the 1990s.

The poverty rate for illegal Hispanics in these states rose to 25.5 percent in 2000 from 19.7 percent in 1990. What's more, the number of people in Southern Hispanic households was significantly higher than their white and black counterparts.

Only 38 percent of those in the six Southern states arrive with a high school diploma. Fifty-seven percent do not speak English.

President Vicente Fox of Mexico has to be laughing at his American counterparts. He doesn't have to provide jobs for the Hispanics who come here, and they send part of their pay back to Mexico to support those who remain.

    Great Letter!!!

The cost of educating an illegal alien is PROHIBITIVE and reason enough on its own to deport all illegals so we can get our schools back for American Kids and save TRILLIONS that is now being spent on teachers, special programs, and CLASSROOMS for illegal aliens.

    It is NUTS!!

Stop this madness and get these peope out of here NOW!!

Last figures I read regarding the Hispanic drop-out rate in California schools was 60% or so.

That jives with my experience in the California public schools.

The studies I have read never mentioned the climate created by so many of those students of a "particular ethnicity" wherein Anglo students were subject to constant ridicule for being "womanish" for studying, applying one's self to education instead of striving for many menial labor in adulthood.

Attending Modesto Junior College in the 70s and later in the early 1980s when the school year began in September there were plenty of males belonging to a certain ethnicity who lingered, hung out in the hallways where they typically assembled in groups in the middle of the hall, severely impeding the passage of students from class-to-class.

Tiring of the delays, observing the long lines of students lined up to pass the group one at a time, and even then having to turn sideways to avoid touching the assembled males, I decided it was time to end the madness.

Bellowing an "Excuse me" I strode through the middle of the huddled mass. Those vatos did clear a path but a little bit of bumping happened. Passing through the group I decided to re-tie an already tied shoe. Turning, I bent down and untied then retied the lace while looking up and smiling. I reveled in the shocked looks. After arising I smiled again and walked away, surprised that even when my back was turned nothing was said.

After a couple weeks into the new school year the "certain ethnic males" virtually disappeared, except for a very few who were present to actually attend classes, who fitted in just fine, were just regular people and were not present to impede others and harass the masses in various ways.

The harassment was never to the point that security could boot them off campus. Females received the most harassment but males were also harassed, albeit in a different manner. Intimidation via stares, stares by 20 eyes or more, NEVER but one pair. Mumbled threats and intimidating poses...... the ethnic males seemed to enjoy their immature antics.

The student body breathed a collective sigh of relief after those couple weeks passed. The psychic environment of the campus altered drastically. The tension was gone and people could enjoy the academic environment.

For various reasons I can not go into any detail. Suffice it to write that not much has changed. Your kid's education is being harmed by the antics of "certain people." It isn't right but the way things are in our perverted society; the embracing of diversity even when doing so harms society and the apparent lust for multi-culturalism based on emotion rather than logic.

I do chuckle at the "politically correct" idiots when, after one minute they demand diversity and multi-culturalism, the same mental midgets bemoan how certain cultures deny females full rights. Huh? That culture is just being diverse!!!!! So what if the males of that culture require their females to be subservient, to marry who they are told to marry, to cover their face when in public, to not drive a car or work where they come in contact with males. That's multi-culturalism!!!! Aren't we supposed to embrace it? I don't hear or read of the politically correct crowd whining about the behavior of a sizeable percentage of a certain ethnic male group regarding their behavior in schools.

    BAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

tell me about the "stare thing" that latino males do - to women mostly - it is such a social intrusion-
I bet those guys that dropped out were there when school got out- to find nice girls they could get pregnant!
I don't see latino females as subservient so much - maybe the ones that were raised in mexico. they seem to be have a real sense of themselves - not always in a good way either
