    Illegal immigrant sought in stabbing

An illegal Hispanic immigrant remains at large after Coweta authorities say he attempted to kill his estranged wife's boyfriend moments before midnight on New Year's Eve.

The home invasion happened on Dec. 31 approximately five minutes before midnight at 10 Sweetbriar Drive in the Sweetbriar Mobile Home Park in Palmetto, according to Lt. John Lewis of the Coweta County Sheriff's Office.

The victim, 22-year-old Corino Flores, was asleep at the residence with his girlfriend, 23-year-old Mary Cano, who is the homeowner. Flores was awakened when he was suddenly stabbed in his head. He described to the authorities a feeling of wetness on his head and face, which he soon realized was his own blood.

Flores recognized his girlfriend's estranged husband, 33-year-old Benjamin Cano, as his attacker, according to Lewis.

Cano had reportedly made prior threats to Flores that he was going to kill him, according to Investigator Casey Mullis of the sheriff's office.

When Flores awakened, Cano was reportedly still swinging the knife at him. Flores received multiple stab wounds to his head and face. He put his arms up in self defense and suffered additional cuts to his left arm, according to Lewis.

Flores managed to get out of bed and flee his girlfriend's residence on foot. He returned to his residence, which is also in the mobile home park, and called 911.

Mary Cano reported to police that she awakened to see Flores fleeing with her estranged husband close behind. Cano abandoned the pursuit and tried to come after his wife, but she had locked him out of the bedroom.

Cano eventually fled in a tan-colored 1998 Chevrolet Z-71 truck with a Tennessee drive-out tag, according to investigators.

Mary Cano fled to Flores' residence, where she realized he'd been stabbed, according to Lewis. Flores was transported to Piedmont Newnan Hospital where he was treated and has since been released.

Investigator Mullis arrived to process the scene. He spoke with a witness who had been asleep on the couch and saw Flores and Cano run from the residence, and Cano leave the area in the Chevrolet truck. Mullis determined that the point of entry into the residence had been through the bedroom window by aid of a milk crate.

Cano has reportedly made threats that "his job isn't finished yet," according to Lewis. He also reportedly made threats to his estranged wife, whom he's been separated from for more than a year, that "she's next," according to Mullis.

The authorities believe that Cano remains in town and may try to make good on his threats.

Cano is wanted for aggravated assault, burglary and criminal attempt to commit murder, according to Mullis.
