WOODSTOCK, Ga. -- Cherokee County authorities say they discovered nine illegal immigrants under blankets in a pickup truck stopped on Interstate-575 in Woodstock.

Sheriff's Maj. Ron Hunton says the driver, also an illegal immigrant, had a large amount of cash and apparently had driven the group from Arizona.

He says the large amount of money indicated to police the driver was hired to transport the group. He declined to specify the amount.

A deputy stopped the truck about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday because of a tag violation.

Besides providing a false name, the driver, Alexander Nieves Lopez, was charged with a number of traffic violations. He and his passengers were being held at the Cherokee Adult Detention Center for federal immigration officials.
