LAKE FOREST – Property owners in a month will have authority to expel trespassers.

The City Council on Tuesday unanimously approved a citywide ordinance prohibiting trespassing on private property. The new law will provide an additional tool for property and business owners as well as law enforcement.

The city used to require property owners to submit a letter requesting sheriff's deputies to remove trespassers. The practice ended about two months ago after attorneys for the Sheriff's Department discouraged it.

The ordinance – modeled after similar ones in Orange, San Rafael, San Jose and Glendale – states that trespassers asked to leave can be cited and/or arrested if they do not comply. Violators can be charged with a misdemeanor.

For it be enforced, signs stating "no trespassing" have to be posted at the entrance of a business or common area. The signage also must be placed every 300 feet.

Subjects of common complaints for trespassing are homeless people who camp out near trash enclosures, loitering teens, and day laborers who solicit work near the light-industrial area at Jeronimo Road and Orange Avenue, said Lt. Jay LeFLore, Lake Forest chief of police services.

City officials will meet with property owners to educate them about the ordinance before it goes into effect, said Mayor Richard Dixon.
