GA: Immigration law protest planned for Thursday

Immigration law protest planned for Thursday

    By Andria Simmons

    The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Immigrants, students, religious groups and members of the civil rights community will gather Thursday at the state Capitol for a protest against legislation they perceive as being anti-immigrant.

The organizers include members of the Georgia Latino Alliance for Human Rights and the Georgia Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition. They are protesting outside the Gold Dome against HB 87 and SB 40, so-called Arizona copycat laws. Opponents claim the bills will harm Georgia’s economy and encourage racial profiling.

The protest will be held from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the Capitol steps facing Washington Street.

ATLANTA (AP) -- The Indigo Girls plan to join activist groups at a rally at the Georgia state Capitol to protest proposed immigration laws.

The folk rock duo plans to speak and perform at the rally Thursday that is organized by a coalition of civil liberties and immigrant rights groups. Organizers say they expect thousands of people, including students and religious leaders.

The groups say immigration legislation proposed by state Rep. Matt Ramsey and state Sen. Jack Murphy, both Republicans, would harm Georgia's economy and lead to racial profiling.

Supporters of the legislation say the bills, which include some provisions that are similar to a tough law enacted last year in Arizona, are necessary to fight illegal immigration in the state since the federal government hasn't solved the problem.
