    Ga. Lawmaker's Wife Appeals Deportation

    Ga. Lawmaker's Wife Appeals Deportation

ATLANTA (AP) -- The wife of a Georgia legislator known as an outspoken advocate for immigration rights is in hiding after federal agents came to their home with a deportation order, her lawyer said.

Sascha Herrera, the wife of Democratic state Sen. Curt Thompson, was ordered deported after she missed a federal court hearing in February 2005, her lawyer Charles Kuck said.

Kuck said he plans to ask an immigration judge Monday to reconsider the order calling for her deportation, though it could take as long as a month before a decision is made. During that time, Kuck said Herrera could be deported if she's caught.

Thompson, 37, a Democrat from Atlanta, married Herrera, 28, in April. In a written statement, Thompson said he checked his wife's immigration status before they were wed and they both believed she was here legally from her native Colombia because she has a valid student visa.

Kuck said Herrera is victim of a notary public who posed as a lawyer and filed an asylum application without her consent. The notary then listed his business as the address and all notices were sent there instead of Herrera's home, prompting the woman to miss an important hearing, Kuck said.

In some Spanish-speaking countries, a "notario publico" is a lawyer with authority to negotiate with government officials. In the U.S., a "notario" is often a notary public with no expertise in immigration law.

Wow, what is this country coming to when an individual wishing for mercy from the courts is "hiding" to avoid arrest. Furthermore, that alone should be reason for arresting her husband and lawyer for aiding and abetting an illegal immigrant.

The lady is under a deportation order, which means it's time to go!

So he and his educated wife were too stupid to see a lawyer and somehow it is the government's fault. She's "a victim?"

So, she went to a guy who told her he was a "notario publico" to get her paperwork done. Are we to now assume that "immigration lawyer" is yet another one of those jobs that Americans don't want to do?

There was a blurb in the AJC sunday paper about his wife being on the deportation list long before they were married, because of that their marriage will not protect her from deportation unless of course he lines a few pockets or "sells" his vote for help.

I tried to get the link from the AJC, but I refuse to pay $5.95 for maybe 10 sentences Yes folks, I'm frugal (cheap )

Their multiple excuses make a most unlikely story. I'm not buying one word of it.

    Marriage can't stop wife's deportation

You really do learn something new every day.

Take the U.S. govenment's effort to deport the wife of state Sen. Curt Thompson (D-Norcross).

The wedding vows he and Sascha Herrera exchanged in April do not protect his immigrant wife from being sent back to Colombia and barred from returning to the United States for 10 years.

That's because a judge had issued her deportation order prior to her marriage to Thompson.

"There's nothing a marriage can do to circumvent the immigration judge's ruling," said Chris Bentley, a spokesman for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services in Washington last week.

Till death or deportation do you part.

She should exit the country and return legally just like everyone else.

I would keep her on the radar because she is Columbian and marring someone of position. Is she a spy or influencing policy for the drug cartels. This just smells all over.
