Henderson Co., N.C. - Illegal immigration

    Illegal immigration

The issue: The Henderson County Board of Commissioners is forming a committee to study how illegal immigration affects the county and what local leaders can do to address the problem.

Background: Former County Commissioner Shannon Baldwin had a number of resolutions and reports on illegal immigration included in the commissioners' Oct. 19 meeting agenda. County leaders passed a resolution at that time calling on "all immigrants in Henderson County to secure and maintain legal status." A month later, on Nov. 7, commissioners voted 3-2, with Baldwin and Commissioner Larry Young opposed, to quash discussion of the issue, saying it is a problem federal and state governments should tackle. But two weeks later, Chairman Bill Moyer asked the commissioners to consider resident Dick Baird's proposal for the county to create a "Blue Ribbon Committee on Illegal Immigration." Moyer said the committee should take information compiled by Baldwin and from other sources to determine how illegal immigration is affecting the county and what might be done about it.

What's new: At Monday's meeting, Moyer rejected an initial proposal from county staff for the make-up of the committee, saying it was tilted toward constituents with a vested interest in continuing to allow illegal immigration. The county should balance the committee to include "taxpayers who have to pay the extra freight" for illegal immigrants as well as groups that provide services, such as public schools, churches, the community college, public health and social services.

What's next: Commissioners instructed County Manager Steve Wyatt to come back with a revised proposal for the makeup of the panel. According to its charter, the committee will study the impact of illegal immigration on the county and what the county can legally do to address the problem. County Attorney Russ Burrell will provide legal advice to the panel, which will be appointed to serve through July 1, 2007.

Looks like our friends in Henderson Co have been contacting the good chairman.

I don't see why anyone needs a "Blue Ribbon Committee on Illegal Immigration" to see the devastating effects of illegal aliens on city and county resources. But at least they can't stack the deck with all advocates.

My mother-in-law lives in a retirement community in Hendersonville. She can't go to the Walmart after dark or by herself. When I was there in July it looked like Juarez.
Henderson county has a lot of orchards - cheap labor benefits the growers and they don't seem to be concerned with the impact on the community.

here in the town where I live we have an ordnance that: A pet owner is responsible for that pet at all times, it must be on the owners property or on a leash. If it bites someone or does property damage the pet owner is 100% responsible.
    hummmm, now if we could............................

We have relatives in Hendersonville who say it's worse every day.

Haven't been to the Apple Festival in four years now because of growers hiring illegals. The Christmas tree growers are just as bad.
