The Georgia state Senate is expected to vote on an immigration bill that would require many employers to check the immigration status of new hires and would authorize police to verify the immigration status of criminal suspects.

The bill proposed by Sen. Jack Murphy is on the Senate agenda Monday. Another bill that has some similarities but is not identical passed the House earlier this month.

A key difference between the bills is that Murphy's provides exceptions to the requirement for employers to check the status of new hires under certain circumstances.

Both bills would authorize law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of criminal suspects who can't produce an accepted form of identification, which is similar to a provision in a tough law enacted last year in Arizona.
