Act like a citizen or get out!

I'm not easily surprised, but last week I watched a news clip from 2007, long before the immigration fracas of today broke out. And though I shouldn't have been astonished, I still am scratching my head on this one.

In case you didn't hear about it, let me recap. It seems that a restaurant owner near Reno, Nev., flew the Mexican flag above the American flag, one on top of the other, which is a big no-no, according to the American Flag Code. Unfortunately, its only frowned upon to fly any other flag above the American flag, but not illegal. Whatever. There are strict protocols for flying Old Glory, but they apparently are only optional and hold no consequences for disrespecting the Red, White and Blue.

In the video, Army veteran Jim Brossard walked up to the restaurant and pulled down both the Mexican flag and the American flag. He cut the American flag loose. According to the Reno Police Department, Mr. Brossard could have faced charges for theft if the restaurant owner had wanted to pursue that avenue. Fortunately, the owner, out of the kindness of his heart, did not go that far. Why did this American veteran have to resort to a criminal action to make a point? Let me be perfectly clear: I do not support the actions of Mr. Brossard; I do, however, understand his reasons. The restaurant owner might as well have given the U.S. the finger. Hey buddy, if you'd like to fly the Mexican flag over the American flag, move to Mexico. I wish I could say this is the only time this has happened, but you know I can't. It happens far too often.

Don't just talk about your patriotism; display it with one of several flags offered in WorldNetDaily's Superstore

So what's changed since then? Not much. People from other countries are still flocking here by the thousands, some illegally, some legally, only to disrespect the very place they sought for refuge. Which brings me to the point … why do people come here, become citizens and then disgrace all that we as a nation stand for? It pains me that some people applauded the restaurant owner as though he'd done some great act. He said he was "flying the flag as a mark of solidarity with the Hispanic community." Don't fool yourself into thinking it was for some "greater cause," because it wasn't. He wanted to make a point and show his disrespect for this great land of ours. You know what really sucker punched me? The fact that he is a citizen. Yikes!

What a country we live in. Sometimes I wonder why thousands of people bother to risk their lives every day to come here. Oh yeah, I remember now, it's so they can have all the glorious rights of freedom this veteran fought to uphold and then go stomp on all we stand for without regret or consequences. Just to clarify, I don't believe all immigrants or naturalized citizens want to disrespect this country or the American flag. I do believe, however, that if you're going to come here for that better life, maybe you should be a little more appreciative; maybe you should be shaking the hand of that veteran and every other man and woman in uniform.

How sick is our country? We congratulate those who condemn and hate it. We apologize to those who offend it and disrespect those who stick up for it.

The most disgusting thing about this incident is when it came time to defend his despicable actions, the restauranteur let the veteran cut down the flags, take the American flag and walk right past him. Instead of standing up for his "right" to slap the U.S. in the face, he took the Mexican flag into his restaurant with his tail between his legs like the coward he is. He didn't even stand up for what he thought was right. If you're going to make a statement like that, and mock the country you claim to be a citizen of, the least you can do is use that backbone God blessed you with to defend your actions.

Now, I know you're all wondering, "Chrissy, why are you rehashing this pathetic incident?" Well my friends, because we need to be reminded of the Jim Brossards of this country, who defend her and protect her and, above all, stand up for her. And we also need to be reminded of those who continue to rub their "citizenship" in our faces.

My dose of honesty: Legally, the restaurant owner is a citizen of the United States, but should he be? Anyone who thinks it's OK to fly Mexico's flag or Canada's flag or the Confederate flag or any other flag above the American flag should be escorted out and sent packing back to the country they still have feelings for. Being an American citizen is a privilege, not a right. You shouldn't be able to call yourself an American just because you were born here or because you took a citizenship test. There's so much more to it than that. We need to show our loyalty to this country by treating her with respect. We need to prove our devotion by lifting American up. It's not too much to ask. And to this restaurant owner: You don't deserve to call yourself an American, because a true American never backs down and always stands up for the Red, White and Blue.
