Baby Abuelita featured in math textbook

Baby Abuelita -- the Miami-based company that makes DVDs, books and other toys based around its line of plush dolls that sing Spanish lullabies -- is going to school. The company's characters are being featured in a math textbook produced by education giant Houghton Mifflin Harcourt that will be distributed in Florida public schools later this year.

While the book deal is not a source of revenue for Baby Abuelita, it's marketing gold, said company CEO Carol Finster.

``I really see this as a statement about the depth and authenticity of our characters, and that our whole concept has more than just commercial appeal,'' Finster said. ``The exposure and the long term returns are immeasurable because textbooks are around for years.''

Baby Abuelita is also in ``advanced talks'' with a media partner about creating a television show based on its characters, she said.

Launched in 2005, Baby Abuelita won second place in the Miami Herald Business Plan Challenge that same year.

    A toy line.....fine.

But math text books to be used in school.....why?

I've had four kids go through the lower grades in elementary and not once have I ever seen ANY characters used in textbooks. That's pretty much pre-schoolish type of material......

What's wrong with just numbers and the usual types of graphics being used in school textbooks? It's always been effective in the past or is the implication here that these kids are so educationaly challenged that they can't learn anything unless it's being taught to them on a pre-school level?

Instead of applauding it, the parents ought to be taking offense.........

Just another method of using immersion techniques to get the general populace to accept Latinos. Just take a look at commercials, product labeling, etc. that are using more and more Latinos to promote their products.

    Disney could sue them.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

The Miami Herald claims to have updated the article but I see no difference. What is interesting is that is states 2 comments but you can't see them.

I don't understand this at all. Besides that, you would think that Florida would put Mickey Mouse in school books, since Disney brings so much money to their state.

If I were Mickey, I'd be mad.
