(The Politico) The hot-button issue of immigration doesn’t appear to be going away anytime soon – at least not in Republican circles.

Is McCain implying or saying there is a correlation between Santorum's stance on illegal immigration and his defeat?? C'mon. And from what I read, there were many reasons why Oberweis didn't win (and not because of his immigration stance), one of which is this is not a GOP year. If anyone lives in his district or knows more about this, please elaborate or clarify.

But this shows that if McCain gets elected, he'll likely push massive amnesty. He already seems to be backing off his transparently cynical and weak stance on "securing the border first."

The GOP and McCain are no longer a functional political group that deserves my vote....

I will not in good conscious vote for more corruption of the US government because of Ill fated views (Amnesty for Illegal Aliens) and fear mongering to prop up more corruption

The GOP needs to collapse in on it's own corrupt weight.... After being a Republican all my adult life I have left the party that left me

If a politician has my views he or she will get my vote.. if they do not follow my views they are worthless to me... it doesnt matter if they are a republican or democrat.. I will not vote straight party lines nor will I stop slamming any politician that wants the Illegal Alien Invasion to continue OR push for Amnesty

McCain... you need to take your Old Goat Smelling A$$ and go retire... thank you for your service.. but as a 21.5 year veteran myself you and your political carrear was pathetic and same as your old buddy Lindsy ... go play some bad mitton or shuffle board in Florida

That was 2006, BEFORE we, the taxpaying citizens, saw millions of illegal aliens marching in the streets of LA. Let's not forget, Barletta won his office by a landslide.

NOW WE KNOW that much of our money has gone towards supporting these criminals. Our economy has nosedived, but IA's are still taking from us. An informed American is a pissed off American, John boy!

Illinois is a "sanctuary state" and will soon feel the pain of being in that position. Oberweis didn't lose over his "immigration" issues, he was the victim of a libelous tv campaign and OBL groups, from what I heard.

I'm having a very difficult time with this sentence. I almost want to laugh as soon as my blood pressure subsides.

In June 2005, the PA legislature voted themselves a huge pay raise in the middle of the night, hoping to keep it secret. DIDN'T WORK.

From then until the Nov 06 election, there was a CONSTANT BARRAGE of news articles, editorials, letters to the editor, TV news bites, etc., on the sneaky pay raise.

When the election finally came, THE CITIZENS OF PA DIDN'T FORGET and voted accordingly........voting in dummycrats (enough to really screw the state).

Rick Santorum was a victim of this backlash.

The citizens of PA are victims, in as much as the liberal, tax and spend, dummycrats are now SETTING ON ALL THE ILLEGAL ALIEN LEGISLATION, refusing to bring it to the floor. They care nothing about PA citizens......only bringing in their state-wide gambling and lining their pockets from that lucrative pastime (yes.....they ARE profiting because they were allowed to buy in).

I was afraid that the Oberweis loss would be spun that way by the open border folks. It would be nice to see a more general analysis of why he lost and if his immigration stance actually hurt or helped him.

Heck, who knows, maybe it was McCain campaigning for him that made Oberweis lose and the story should really be about "Candidates cautioned on McCain".

McCain should be minding his own business. Also, Hassert didn't loose because of immigration, he lost because Americans are mad at Bush and they took it out on the Republicans and added to that was all the anti-war voters.

    anti-immigrant rhetoric
That's hate speech!!!!! Help ACLU, SPL, ADL... they are talking bad about the Americans again.

The majority does not utter rhetoric.

Malkin has written about why Oberweis lost this round:

Why the GOP lost Hastert’s seat, continued
By Michelle Malkin • March 11, 2008 10:45 AM Over the weekend, I noted the GOP’s very significant defeat in the special election for former House Speaker Dennis Hastert’s congressional seat. Open-borders propagandists have seized the opportunity to blame losing Republican Jim Oberweis’s loss on his tough, pro-immigration enforcement stance. Reason magazine gloated and Wall Street Journal editorial board showed open glee...

Once again, the Wall Street Journal gets it wrong. Here’s what those in the know–those without shamnesty-lust rotting their brains–had to say about Oberweis’s defeat:

The 14th District has long been considered a Republican stronghold. So how did Foster, a scientist and businessman from Geneva, muster enough votes to win? His campaign staffers believe that voters are hungry for change, and an endorsement by Illinois’ own political rock star, Sen. Barack Obama, certainly didn’t hurt the cause.

But prominent area Republicans think the difference might have had more to do with Republicans not turning up at the polls — or voting for Foster, if they did come out to vote. That, combined with low turnout overall (roughly 20 percent of registered voters cast ballots) turned the tide for Foster, some are saying.

Oberweis spokesman Bill Pascoe said Monday that it is too early to accurately assess how the election slipped away. He said he would need to see numbers telling him who voted, and where.
