Geno's owner donates to defense of Hazleton immigration measure

    Associated Press

HAZLETON, Pa. - The owner of a Philadelphia cheesesteak joint recently in the spotlight for his English-only ordering policy has donated $10,000 to help the city of Hazleton defend its crackdown on illegal immigration.

"I'm behind you 100 percent," Joey Vento, owner of Geno's Steaks, wrote in a handwritten letter to Hazleton Mayor Louis Barletta.

Barletta met with the cheesesteak king last summer because of their shared views on illegal immigration. He said Vento's contribution brings the city's legal defense fund to $45,000, which may still fall short of legal fees.

The ordinance, the original version of which passed in July, would penalize companies and landlords that do business with illegal immigrants. Its implementation has been temporarily stayed by a federal judge.

Hispanic groups and the American Civil Liberties Union have filed a lawsuit challenging the ordinance, arguing that only the federal government can regulate immigration.

Vento has defended the ordinance in an ad on Philadelphia talk radio, and Barletta and supporters have set up a a Web site, http://www.smalltowndefenders.com, where people can donate to Hazleton's legal defense fund.

Vento made national headlines of his own over the summer by posting small signs telling customers, "This Is AMERICA: WHEN ORDERING 'SPEAK ENGLISH.'"

I wonder how long it took Vento's family to learn English once they hit these shores? I'm guessing it was measured in weeks or months, not years, and I'll wager it never once occurred to them to insist that the businesses in their new home cater to them by providing Italian language menus or servers.

I am asking the question again...

Where are all the stars...that have spoken out for other countries?

I won't ever listen to your cause for another country...EVER AGAIN.

WHEN YOU WON'T EVEN STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR YOUR OWN while greed brings the presence of evil upon our land.

WHERE IS YOUR MONEY, YOUR TIME, YOUR VOICE? I guess you've been bought out too!
Please help save America for our children and grandchildren... they are counting on us. THEY DESERVE the goodness of AMERICA not to be given to those who are stealing our children's future! ... and a congress who works for THEM!

I recall Mayor Barletta saying most of the contributions they've rec'd were small. But small ones add up, nothing wrong with that.

Well, CROCKET, I can speak from experience here as Joe, Barletta, Tancredo and I are cut from the same "immigration cloth" directly from Italy.

Although the 'oldtimers' didn't speaka de English very well, they forced the families to speak English at all times except in their own homes. You see........WE'RE AMERICANS. Every one of their children spoke beautifully BOTH languages. None of our parents had a hint of an accent except a 'yankee' one.

Considering that our grandparents had to learn enough English to build businesses & conduct finances immediately, they were fast learners, all in all.

We recently found one of our Grandfather's citizenship papers. When he became an American Citizen, he denounced the King of Italy. His rough signature is on the American document. It warmed our hearts as all the cousins passed it around the Thanksgiving table. LOL, even at our age, we were so impressed with all 4 of our grandparents adventures.

I too have naturalization papers of two great-great grandfathers denouncing the Kingdom of Prussia so I know the kind of document you mean.

One should be proud of their heritage but I believe a person can only have allegiance to one country in their heart.

    Exactly, JEAN

We were taught, not just through words, but through actions, how precious it is to be an AMERICAN.

I'm grateful for such a strong Love of Country and work ethic that we were given as a legacy from our Grandparents and parents.......who never received a "freebie" from the government.

LOL, we often travel to Italy to learn about our family and each trip gives us more appreciation of the US of A and how much we love her.
Immigrants then were running away from communism, socialism and dicatorships. Today.........they're importing it! Especially the ILLEGALS
