Deal: No Immigration Law Changes

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal said he isn't seeking changes to Georgia's tough law targeting illegal immigration.

Deal made the comments to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution after speaking at a Georgia Farm Bureau luncheon in Atlanta. Deal said parts of the law have only been in effect for a few months and more time is needed to assess how it's working.

Georgia farmers have complained since Deal signed the legislation last May that it's scaring away the Hispanic migrant workers on whom they rely.

Deal said the federal government needs to reform its agricultural guest worker program to make it easier for farmers to use. Many farmers say the program is cumbersome and expensive.

Farm Bureau president Zippy Duvall told the newspaper he thinks an economic impact study should have been carried out before the law was enacted.
