Jailed Colombian Drug Lord Claims Claustrophobia, Wants New
Friday, September 12, 2008
NEW YORK β A reputed Colombian drug lord more used to a life of luxury than solitary confinement wants out of his cramped maximum security cell in New York City.
A lawyer for Juan Carlos Ramirez Abadia said Friday he's asked a federal judge to move his client to the general population at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
The attorney, Paul Navel, says Ramirez Abadia has suffered from claustrophobia since childhood and his box-like cell is too small.
The alleged drug kingpin's posh beach homes, ranch and yacht have been sold at auction by the Brazilian government. The 45-year-old Ramirez Abadia was captured last year in a luxurious home in Brazil.
Ramirez Abadia is the accused leader of a cartel that allegedly shipped cocaine worth $10 billion into the United States between 1990 and 2003.
