Republicans prepare toughest anti-illegal immigration plan

Los Angeles .- Republican lawmakers are preparing a legislative proposal to develop a plan to add more fences, sensors, actors and even unmanned aircraft to combat illegal immigration.

According to a dispatch from Los Angeles Times, Republican congressmen seeking to reinforce a plan that requires the government to develop a plan that addresses the situation in the U.S. border.

The legislative effort offers another example of how the conservative wing of the Congress has directed the immigration debate with the requirement that the Obama administration will improve border security and strict enforcement of immigration laws, were scored.

In December, an outgoing Democratic-controlled House approved the Dream Act, a reform that would have created a path to citizenship for some illegal immigrant youths in this country, but was defeated in the Senate.

With that action, the Republicans intend to force the Democrats to take a stand on immigration issues before the 2012 presidential campaign, he said the Times.

The debate on the change in tone is also presented as census data show that Latinos are the fastest growing bloc of voters, a potentially complicating factor for Republican strategists.

The number of Latino voters is increasing in states that in 2010 won congressional seats and electoral votes, according to a study published in January by the Pew Hispanic Center.

"The immigration skirmishes seem to excite the Republican base, said Wayne Cornelius, a professor emeritus at the University of California at San Diego who has spent more than 40 years dedicated to the study of cross-border migration.

"In the short term, they calculate that they can win more votes with these hard-line proposals," he said, "but some may be reluctant to Latino voters," he said.

A Republican strategist acknowledged that intra-party debate how to handle the immigration law?, Without alienating Latino voters who might otherwise agree with the conservative aspects of the party's platform.

Republican activists have said they believe that some Latino voters support the Republican Party's position on immigration.

Many Republicans want a revamped immigration system that is consistent with the values of a nation of immigrants, and party members to speak out loudly against the reforms are a "minority," said the strategist, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the sensitivity of the debate.

The U.S. has spent more than four thousand 500 million to improve border security in the nine years since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, and critics contend that stop every illegal crossing is a practical goal.

"It's all show and only symbolic. You never get that plan in the Senate. It may be useful short-term election, but will not lead to a real law," said Cornelius.

But Representative Candice S. Miller, a Michigan Republican who wrote the Border Security Act of 2011, said that "Congress should reflect the political will of the majority of American people, which is to secure our borders."

The Republican effort to push the Homeland Security Department to take a tougher stance on immigration enforcement responds to a request last year by the seven Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee who asked the department to determine the amount of money needed to deport every illegal immigrant the government found.

The Homeland Security Department has not calculated the cost, but a 2005 report by the Center for American Progress found that require 206 billion U.S. dollars over five years to deport 11 million people living illegally in the country.

Obama's government, in practice, has largely supported the argument that border security is a top priority, said Cornelius.

"It's really a red herring. We will never be safe enough (...) border hostages Make immigration reform to border security is a recipe for political paralysis," he said.
