GOP loses bid to block suit against AZ law (Vote Record)
GOP loses bid to block suit against AZ law
By The Associated Press
Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at 4:12 p.m.
WASHINGTON — Senate Democrats have turned back a move by Republicans to block the Justice Department from pursuing its lawsuit to overturn Arizona's controversial immigration law.
The bid by South Carolina Republican Jim DeMint to nix the lawsuit came out on the losing end of a 55-43 vote. Five Democrats voted against the lawsuit while two Republicans voted not to kill it.
The law requires officers, while enforcing other laws, to check a person's immigration status if there's a reasonable suspicion the person is in the country illegally.
The administration argues that the law is unconstitutional because immigration is a federal responsibility. Some claim the law will result in racial profiling.

Senate strikes GOP attempt to block immigration lawsuit
06:42 PM
By Lauren Victoria Burke, AP
The Senate has voted down an amendment that would have prohibited the Justice Department from spending money to pursue its lawsuit against Arizona's controversial immigration law.
Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., tried to attach the measure to legislation moving through Congress that would extend unemployment benefits for out-of-work Americans. The Senate voted 43-55 against the proposal.
"Our federal government should be doing its job to secure our borders rather than trying to bully and intimidate the people of Arizona," DeMint said.
The state law requires police to question the immigration status of suspects when there is "reasonable suspicion" they are in the country illegally. The Justice Department sued Arizona earlier this month over the law.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican, created a fund in June that lets supporters donate to pay for legal fees for the law's defense.
The Senate shut down several other Republican amendments to the unemployment bill, including another by DeMint to repeal the estate tax and a proposal by Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown to offset the cost of the extended benefits with economic stimulus money.

Where were the three AZ Dems who publically came out and criticised the DOJ when they came out and sued AZ? Are they now sitting on their hands. They already blamed the White House as "not helping" their re-election bids. A yes vote may have worked in their favor.
