GOP win in Mass. clouds immigration debate

GOP win in Mass. clouds immigration debate

While Scott Brown's election could derail President Obama's hope of passing health care reform, it is less clear how the Republican victory in the Massachusetts Senate race on Tuesday will impact another one of Obama's domestic priorities: immigration reform.

As a state senator, Brown took a conservative stance toward undocumented immigrants, according to Paul Watanabe, a political science professor at the University of Massachusetts-Boston.

Brown opposed a proposal to let undocumented immigrants obtain state driver's licenses and a proposal to let undocumented students pay in-state tuition for college, Watanabe said.

While campaigning for the Senate seat left open by the late Edward Kennedy, Brown also opposed a legalization program allowing undocumented immigrants to earn citizenship. His opponent, state Attorney General Martha Coakley, supported comprehensive immigration reform favored by Obama, including a program that creates a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

“I think he is definitely perceived as someone who is not an immigration reformer,â€

I think more to the point is will the Senate try to do anything. The House has already said they will not move BEFORE the Senate does. At this point does the Senate really want a contentious debate and bringing up something which is such a political hot potato. I think you have to ask if they really want another fight on the floor of the Senate over something which the public doesn't like and is only more apt to create hard votes for Senators whom I doubt want to take any more hard votes.

No, it doesn't cloud the debate. The American people are opposed and will remain opposed to amnesty.

I so loathe the PC writers that call them undocumented immigrants, rather than illegal immigrants or illegal aliens. Then they present the pending battle as between pro-immigration and anti-immigration forces. That is not what is going on! CIR ASAP is mostly aimed at making citizens out of ILLEGALS, not addressing necessarily those that immigrate here through the proper channels. There is a very big difference and shame on anyone that does not address it. Ergo, it is deceptive and untruthful.

Again, chances of an amnesty bill getting any traction are slim to none, the only ones screeming about it are the OBL crowd and Illegal Aliens. The OBL crowd has over played the importance of CIR with the Hispanic vote. Hispanic Americans are preoccupied with the same issues the rest of the populace is, the economy and jobs. They do not have tunnel vision and are not a one issue voting block as the OBL crowd would have us believe. They are also threaten by the Dems bringing in 20 Million Illegals who present a threat to their job security as well.

I so agree with you vortex. I prefer the terms pro-illegal or pro-amnesty vs pro-enforcement. No one is deporting immigrants from this country, we are deporting illegal aliens. HUGE difference.

Agreed! Blanket amnesty has no hope of succeeding for at least another 3-5 years. The (IMHO planned) financial upheaval managed to get out of step with the rush to cheap labor and so the party wound down before last call was sounded.

The new tactic appears to be gradual chipping away at the state and local levels, nibbling around the edges instead of eating the whole feast all at once. The tide can be turned back if people stay vigilant and ready to respond when new activity surfaces in their communities.

It seems that the activities of OBL's and pro-illegal activists have taken on a much more subtle tone for the time being, so keeping the subject alive in the court of public opinion is the new challenge. Fortunately that's what ALIPACers do best!

Agreed. The tide is turning against the PC BS that has slowly and methodically eliminated the laws and borders of this nation. If they continue to push this agenda the level of volatility of violence will continue to rise.

They know it they just refuse to publicly acknowledge it. The ethnocentric racists can whine, complain and threaten Obama about re-election all they want, another amnesty AIN'T gonna happen. Even Obama realizes this, which is why he stays in the background and lets his minions continue to encourage the ethnocentrics to keep the issue front and center, while his illegal alien aunt remains in the US "hiding in the shadows."
