Gov. Eliot Spitzer's standing with voters continues to slide

Gov. Spitzer's popularity rating has hit an all-time low, according to a Siena College poll released Monday.
With his administration still grappling with Troopergate investigations and lingering voter discontent over his aborted plan to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, Spitzer got a negative job performance rating from two thirds of voters.
Perhaps even more worrisome for the Democrat was the fact that 61% of those in his own party give him a negative rating, and 56% of all voters say they are not prepared to re-elect him, Siena found.
The same poll had good news for the Democrat most frequently mentioned as a potential challenger to Spitzer in 2010: Attorney Genral Andrew Cuomo. He reeled in a 52% favorability rating, with just 29% saying they're unhappy with his job performance.
The poll was completed a month after the governor scrapped his controversial license plan that caused Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) to stumble in a Democratic presidential debate.
The survey found that just 36% of voters rate Spitzer favorably, while 51% giving him a thumbs down -- a big slide from the 64% approval rating he registered in a similar survey taken last June.
Spitzer can climb out of the cellar if he starts being more candid about efforts by his aides to discredit Senate GOP Leader Joe Bruno, said Jeff Stonecash, a Syracuse University political science professor.
