I agree with you. I have relatives who are going through the process now. Currently it costs $930 to apply for a greencard and $80 for the fingerprint check. The fingerprinting is expensive as the local police departments do it for a lot less but you cannot use them. The security screening goes through the FBI first. They run fingerprints through APHIS which takes less than a day unless they are busy with their own work and then the immigration stuff comes second. Then they run your name through the system and if you have someone with the same name as you who has been in trouble with the law it will take a long time as they need to ensure that you are not that person.

When all of the fees, lawyers ect were paid for, I believe it cost about 10 grand for my husband. When they (the illegals in the shamnesty bill) were offered the 5000 dollar fine, we were in shock, it would have been cheaper to be illegal. Plus, we could not be put on a payment plan. This whole amnesty business is a kick in the teeth to all who have followed the legal path to the American dream.
