Governor Blunt Outlines Plan to Fight Illegal Immigration
Tuesday, Oct 30, 2007 @07:48pm CST

Missouri Governor Matt Blunt visits Springfield on Tuesday asking state officials to help him fight illegal immigration.

"With these actions, we've made a very clear statement. Missouri will not become a safe haven for illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants in Missouri have been put on notice. If they violate out laws, we will discover their status and turn them over to the proper federal authorities." says Governor Blunt.

The governor made that statement at the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop D headquarters. It's in response to this weekend's police work that led to ten illegal immigrants being detained after a traffic stop in Warren County. Governor Blunt has directed state law enforcement agencies to verify the immigration status of every criminal presented for incarceration.

He says his administration is also working with ICE to allow select troopers and water patrol officers to enforce immigration laws. Blunt sent a letter earlier this month asking Missouri's Congressional Delegation to support and help expedite his request.
