NEW: Governor credits border enforcement with crime drop
By Sara Inés Calderón
The Brownsville Herald
Gov. Rick Perry praised a four-county law enforcement operation today in El Paso, stating that crime had dropped 40 percent to 70 percent there, according to a news release from the governor’s office.
Operation El Paso included sheriffs from El Paso, Hudspeth, Culberson and Jeff Davis counties, as well as Dona Ana County in New Mexico. Police departments from El Paso, Socorro, Horizon and Ysleta del Sur were also involved. The Texas National Guard, the Border Patrol, the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the Department of Public Safety also participated.
This particular operation, which is the third staged in the state this summer, resulted in the seizure of 3,600 pounds of marijuana and the arrests of dozens of criminals, according to the release. Two previous operations were staged in the Del Rio and Laredo areas earlier in the summer.
Gov. Perry said he would ask the Texas Legislature for $100 million to sustain border security efforts next summer.Support our FIGHT AGAINST illegal immigration & Amnesty by joining our E-mail Alerts at https://eepurl.com/cktGTn

I think this is about the election. His position on illegal immigration is weak. This enforcement effort was a last minute attempt to grab some votes. Perry was Lt. Gov. under GW Bush and he only made any efforts to end illegal immigration, after Bush put troops on the border. Lame!!!!!
