Grassley would be supportive of a special prosecutor in ‘Gunwalker’

Sen. Charles Grassley, (R-Iowa) ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on a radio interview today, while he’s not calling for a special prosecutor to investigate Operation Fast and Furious, the failed operation to track guns across the Mexican border, he would be supportive if Chairman Darrell Issa, (R-Calif.) of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform called for one.

In the interview on the Steve Gill Show, he had a couple of other interesting things to say.

He said three things came out of the interviews with Ken Melson, the Acting Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

    1. It wasn’t just an ATF operation. FBI and DEA were involved and knew about the operation.

    2. This wasn’t controlled by ATF, the U.S. Attorney in Phoenix was in charge.

    3. Contrary to the information the investigators had been given by letter, everyone inolved knew guns were going across the border.

Dennis K. Burke is the US Attorney for the "District of Arizona". Not sure if this is the same as the District of Phoenix.

He was confirmed to serve as a US Attorney by unanimous consent of the US Senate in Sept 2009, around the same time that Project Gunrunner changed their tactics, in which authorities allowed guns to "walk" into Mexico, rather than try to prevent them from going South.

Here is a paragraph from the link above:

Burke has over 20 years of public service at both the federal and state levels. Burke served as a Senior Advisor to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. He served as Chief of Staff to Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano from 2003 to 2008. Prior to that position, he worked in the Arizona Attorney General's Office as the Chief Deputy Attorney General. He is a former Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Arizona prosecuting drug trafficking cases, was the Assistant Attorney General for Legislative Affairs at the United States Department of Justice, served as a Senior Policy Analyst for the White House Domestic Policy Council during the Clinton Administration and as a Majority Counsel for the United States Senate Judiciary Committee, where he worked on three Supreme Court nominations, intellectual property as well as crime and law enforcement legislation.

It's possible Obama nominated him back in 2009 to have him do the dirty work for him and Napolitano.
