Gregg, Sununu vote on opposite sides on immigration bill
Gregg, Sununu vote on opposite sides on immigration bill
May 25, 2007
WASHINGTON --New Hampshire Sens. Judd Gregg and John Sununu voted on opposite sides on a national immigration measure.
The Senate rejected an effort to bar millions of illegal immigrants from gaining legal status and eventually citizenship. Gregg voted for the rejection Thursday; Sununu voted for the restrictions.
Lawmakers overwhelmingly endorsed the legalization program for millions of illegal immigrants. The bi-partisan proposal also would tighten border security and create a strict verification program to deny jobs to illegal immigrants.
The Senate is expected to consider several other Republican challenges to the immigration overhaul plan after it returns from a weeklong Memorial Day recess
