Sources have confirmed that there was a grenade attack Wednesday at a military base in downtown Matamoros.

The attack took place shortly before noon at the building on along Gonzalez Street between Eighth and Ninth streets, said a Mexican law enforcement official who asked not to be identified citing security reasons.

The official reported that apparently two individuals were wounded in the attack; he wouldn’t confirm if they were soldiers or civilians.

Mexican authorities rushed to the scene and sealed off various streets leading to the building while they conducted their investigation and secured the area against further attacks.

Grenade attacks have become relatively common in Matamoros as two criminal organizations in the area fight over drug trade routes.

A source with firsthand knowledge of criminal activity in Tamaulipas stated that the use of grenades is a tactic commonly associated with the Zetas.
