Group of men repeatedly rape teen in Mexican border city infamous for killings of women

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – Twelve men Thursday repeatedly raped a 17-year-old who they purchased from the organizers of an underground troupe that lures girls in with promises of training for a modeling career but is actually a front for prostitution.
The victim, whose name was not released, told authorities in this border city infamous for violence against women that she had answered a newspaper advertisement seeking "good-looking and attractive girls" and offering to pay them US$300 (euro250) to attend charm school classes.

She said she made contact with two women and one man, who she identified as a former police officer in Juarez, across the border from El Paso, Texas. They paid her several hundred dollars to attend classes on runway modeling, as well as how to sit down and eat during formal dinner parties.

The victim said she was with the organizers around 1 a.m. Thursday, when a man emerged from a luxury sport utility vehicle and paid the trio US$10,000 (euro8,365) to take her away.

The man led the teen into the vehicle, where he blindfolded her and turned up the volume of the radio so she wasn't sure where they were headed. At a residence a shot time later, she was pulled from the vehicle to find another man and 10 of his bodyguards had joined the driver.

The men, most of whom appeared to be drunk and under the influence of a large amount of controlled substances, then held her down and raped her for hours, forcing her to take amphetamines and other pills, she told authorities.

Around 5 a.m., the teen's mother called her cell phone, asking why she had not returned home, and the victim said several men threatened her with pistols to ensure she wouldn't report what was going on.

Hours later, the men released her and put her in a taxi. The victim's mother received a call from one of the women organizing the supposed charm school, who said that if she or her daughter reported what had happened, the perpetrators would hunt down and kill the teen.

Family members filed a complaint with the office of Guadalupe Morfin, president Vicente Fox's special commissioner for the prevention of violence against women in Juarez. Authorities then called a news conference to call attention to the victim's plight.

No arrests have been made in the case.

Federal and state authorities say 363 women have been killed in Juarez since 1993. Public attention has focused on about 100 eerily similar cases: slender young women sexually assaulted, strangled and dumped in the desert.
