Nixed attorneys complained of resources

WASHINGTON, April 15, 2007 (UPI) -- E-mails released in Washington show three fired U.S. attorneys had complained about not having the resources to combat illegal immigration.

The e-mails released by the Justice Department show three of the eight dismissed attorneys were stationed in border-sensitive areas -- Carol Lam in San Diego, Paul Charlton in Phoenix and David Iglesias Albuquerque, N.M. -- and were marked for termination party because of their inability to stem the flow of illegal immigrants into the country, the Los Angeles Times reported Sunday.

The e-mails also revealed the attorneys had complained to Washington, saying they were not being provided with adequate resources to combat illegal immigration and border-related drug crimes.

All three attorneys were praised in their job evaluations and said during congressional testimony they were surprised when the government cited poor performance as justification for their terminations.

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is expected to testify about the firings Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
