GSC students to host discussion on illegal immigration

GAINESVILLE – A group of Gainesville State College students is hosting a town hall panel discussion on illegal immigration next week.

Students for a Progressive Society has invited state leaders with a variety of perspectives on the issue to serve on the panel.

Panel members include State Senator Chip Rogers,(R-Woodstock) author of Senate Bill 529, Myrtle Figueras, Gainesville City Council member and former mayor, Brenau University Tisha Tallman, Regional Counsel of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) Rev. Aquiles Martinez, Professor of Religion, Reinhardt College State Senator Sam Zamarripa, (D-Atlanta)and Martha Zoller, Radio Talk-Show Personality (WDUN).

GSC officials say this meeting will provide an opportunity for "civil discourse on illegal immigration. This is not only one of the most contentious topics facing our state and our nation today, but also one with significant ramifications for our future."

Students for a Progressive Society (SPS) is a non-partisan student group that "values diversity, and is committed to democratic principles of decision making and social justice." The meeting is open to the public. The discussion will be held Monday from 7-9 p.m. at the Oakwood Campus.
