Guadalupe Torch Run Arrives In Midtown

By: NY1 News

Hundreds of the faithful braved the rain Sunday to honor the patron saint of Mexico and draw attention to the plight of immigrants.

The Our Lady Of Guadalupe torch run began 72 days ago.

The 3,000 mile pilgrimage runs through nine Mexican states and 12 here in the U.S.

This year, the run aims to build support for the Dream Act, a measure to to legalize some undocumented students.

According to believers, the Virgin Mary appeared to a Mexican peasant in the 1500s and left her image on his cloak, which hangs in the Basilica of Guadalupe.

"It's like part of our custom, my mom passed it to me. And it's really good. If you say something to her she'll probably have a miracle for you. You know it's amazing," said one runner.

The pilgrimage ended with a mass at Saint Patrick's Cathedral.
