SD: Huron police chief put on leave after bill testimony

Huron police chief put on leave after bill testimony

City officials have put Huron Police Chief Doug Schmitt on administrative leave following his testimony on a bill in the state Senate.

Schmitt testified that he thought two businesses in the Huron area were employing illegal immigrants. He testified on a bill that sought to make it a state crime to hire an illegal immigrant. The bill ultimately failed after opponents said it was an unnecessary duplication of federal law.

Huron Mayor Dave McGirr says that the city will investigate Schmitt's testimony and then "take any action that is deemed appropriate."

A home telephone listing could not immediately found for Schmitt.

Background may show he may have been ordered by the mayor or city council to not speak up. I do think he mayhave some good grounds for litigation against the city for their actions. If he was called in by the senate then he did the right thing. Bottom line is the city does not want business in their area to be put in the press or in a spotlight.

HURON, S.D. (AP) — A U.S. immigration official says there is no record of Huron Police Chief Doug Schmitt asking federal agents to investigate two Huron-area businesses.

Schmitt was put on administrative leave following his testimony on a bill in the state Legislature. The chief said he thought the two businesses were employing illegal immigrants, and he also testified that he had asked U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to check it out. He said his requests "fall completely on deaf ears."

Immigration spokesman Shawn Neudauer (NOO'-dow-ur) tells KOKK radio that an agent was in contact with Schmitt but that there is no record of a formal request for an investigation.

A home telephone listing for Schmitt could not immediately be found.
