The Bush Administration
Carlos Gutierrez
COMMERCE SECRETARY (2005- )

Corporate Connections:
Kellogg Co.

The son of refugees who fled Fidel Castro’s Cuba to Mexico, Carlos Gutierrez began his career selling Frosted Flakes cereal in Mexico City for Kellogg Co. and worked his way up to become company president in 1999.

He replaced Don Evans as commerce secretary in January 2005. Gutierrez turned Kellogg into the country’s largest packaged-food manufacturer and made a name for himself as a smart businessman who Fortune magazine has described as the “most powerful Hispanic American in business today. Gutierrez is neither a close confidant of President Bush nor a well-known political operative.

He helped to recruit Latino voters to the GOP and participated in a Bush economic conference during the president’s first term. But unlike some of his predecessors who headed the Commerce Department, Gutierrez was not a large donor or fundraiser -- he contributed just $11,000 to federal candidates and parties during the 2004 election cycle. As commerce secretary, Gutierrez runs an agency that controls the Census Bureau, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
