Fleeing Drug Violence, Mexicans Pour Into U.S.
    By JAMES C. McKINLEY Jr.
FORT HANCOCK, Tex. — The giant rusty fence of metal bars along the border here, built in recent years to keep illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States, has a new nickname among local residents: Jurassic Park Gate, a nod to the barrier in a 1993 movie that kept dangerous dinosaurs at bay in a theme park.

On the other side, a brutal war between drug gangs has forced dozens of fearful families from the Mexican town of El Porvenir to come to the border seeking political asylum, and scores of other Mexicans have used special visas known as border-crossing cards to flee into the United States. They say drug gangs have laid waste to their town, burning down houses and killing people in the street.

Americans are taking in their Mexican relatives, and the local schools have swelled with traumatized children, many of whom have witnessed gangland violence, school officials say.

"Not everyone coming from El Porvenir is seeking asylum. MANY MEXICANS IN TOWNS ALONG THE RIVER HAVE SPECIAL BORDER CROSSING CARDS, WHICH LET THEM CROSS FOR UP TO 30 DAYS to do business and shop near the border. BUT SOME HAVE USED THE VISAS TO RELOCATE THEIR FAMILIES temporarily to Fort Hancock and other small towns on the Texas side."

    Reply:
And experience teaches us that, once their families are here, THEY WILL NEVER GO HOME, because "civil rights organizations" will get them "Temporary Permanent Resident" status as "refugees", and this will be extended over and over by the government until they and their families are established as de facto U.S. "permanent residents" - all on what was intended to be a special "visa of convenience" allowiing some individual Mexicans to travel to limited areas of, I believe, 4 U.S. states for a maxium stay of 30 days!

We must stop these people. Why isn't the border patrol turning them back?
We must deny them asylum -- they can move to other parts of Mexico. They will come and drop their anchors and we will never get rid of them.

We are not responsible for the safety of Mexican citizens, it is the responsibility of their government. We can not afford to continue to be the safety valve for that corrupt country at the US taxpayers' expense.

Along with the Mexicans will come the drug lords looking for them. We cannot allow this to happen. Our country provides safety for witnesses or victims in the relocation program. Mexico should do the same.

It's just an excuse to run into this country and it would not surprise me one bit if the Mexican government is encouraging this on the other side.

This is an amnesty rush, we saw it the last time an amnesty bill was discussed.

While I certainly feel compassion for the families who may have been legitmately caught in the crossfire of all this, I also agree that their own government should see to their safety (undoubtedly, they will refuse to and expect us to do it). Yet another political manouever, in my mind. As alot of you do, I see many shadowy hands working covertly here to manipulate a bloody situation to suit their own agendas.

You're right! Why aren't these folks heading for Mexico City and demanding protection from El Presidente?

IMO, this is just more proof of our so-called leaderships lackadaisical attitude toward border security!

They are not fleeing in order to escape drug violence. They are fleeing to America to invade like they have been doing for years. This is just a way for our government to sympathize for them. If they want to flee send them to other parts of Mexico or Guatemala.

Absolutely. Wake Up Texas. Get that Arizona bill to your legislature and pass it immediately. This is an outrage. These people don't deserve asylum in the US any more than any other person from one nation deserves asylum in another from the very crime they created in their own nation. They've turned their own country into a hell hole and now they want to move to ours and turn ours into one? Thanks, but no, thanks. And not only "no" but "HELL NO"!
