Twelve runners on a 3,000-mile trek across the country will pass through Phoenix this weekend on a journey aimed at generating support for immigration reform that would benefit day laborers and immigrant workers.

Organizers of the Day Laborer Run for Peace and Dignity hope to call attention to the contributions of immigrant workers at a time when day laborers, many undocumented, find themselves under attack here and in cities and towns across the country.

"The purpose of the run is to create just immigration reform," said Salvador Reza, one of the organizers and a participant. He runs the Macehualli Work Center on 25th Street south of Bell Road, the only organized day-labor site in Phoenix.

Phoenix police recently began charging some day laborers with trespassing in front of the Home Depot on Thomas Road near 36th Street after complaints from business owners and demonstrations by members of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, an anti-illegal immigration group.

After arriving in Phoenix this afternoon, the runners on Sunday will visit several Home Depots in Phoenix where day laborers congregate, including the one on Thomas.

Reza said the runners are expecting several thousand supporters.

On Monday, runners will meet with lawmakers at the Capitol, and then "take a message" to Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, who has taken a tough stance on illegal immigration since assuming taking office last year.

"The message is we are human beings, not criminals," Reza said.

The runners began in Santa Monica, Calif., on March 4 and will finish in New York City on May 1, International Workers Day.

HeHe, what if the runners made it almost to New York, but coyote in a van grabbed them, and then came back to sell them to "safe" house, here in Phoenix, for $500 each. lol

• A confidential California Department of Justice study reported in 1995 that 60 percent of the 20,000-strong 18th Street Gang in southern California are illegal aliens; police officers say the proportion is actually much greater. The bloody gang collaborates with the Mexican Mafia, the dominant force in California prisons, on complex drug-distribution schemes, extortion, and drive-by assassinations, and commits an assault or robbery every day in L.A. County. The gang has grown dramatically over the last two decades by recruiting recently arrived youngsters, most of them illegal aliens, from Central America and Mexico.

• The leadership of the Columbia Lil’ Cycos gang, which uses murder and racketeering to control the drug market around L.A.’s MacArthur Park, was about 60 percent are illegal aliens in 2002, says former assistant U.S. attorney Luis Li. Francisco Martinez, a Mexican Mafia member and an illegal alien, controlled the gang from prison, while serving time for felonious reentry following deportation.

• Eight illegal aliens raped eight American women and fled to Mexico. A Central Park female jogger was raped and killed by illegal aliens.

• In Wenatchee, Washington, the illegal alien man now charged with the murder of deputy Saul Gallegos in Chelan was "voluntarily removed" from the United States three times in recent years but he always came back. Twice illegal alien Jose Sanchez-Guillen was removed from the border at Blaine, and once in Wenatchee. Sanchez-Guillen is now charged with aggravated, first-degree murder and is being held without bail.

• Adrian George Camacho, 28, a Mexican citizen convicted five times of felonies and deported twice for being an illegal alien, was sentenced to death after being convicted of the murder of Officer Anthony Zeppetella.

• Maximiliano Esparza is another violent criminal illegal alien allowed to run loose in the United States with horrific results — the rape and murder of a nun in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Sister Helen Chaska was found strangled and dead with her rosary beads lodged in her neck.

• Juan Manuel Casillas, an illegal alien, shot and killed two teenaged cousins on their way to high school because one of the girls, Olivia Munguia, had broken up with him.

• Israel Cebrera Pulido, an illegal alien, was found guilty of murdering Eugenia and Sabato Russo, an elderly couple who owned a popular restaurant in North Hollywood, the Sabatino Italian Bakery.

• Enrique Alvarez, an illegal alien, kidnapped a nine-year-old girl in San Jose, California, snatching her from her home even though her mother and brother tried to fight him off. The little girl fought back while Alvarez held her hostage and raped her several times.

• Armando Garcia is another of the numerous illegal alien murderers, more than 60 from Los Angeles County alone, taking refuge in Mexico. He shot down LA County deputy sheriff David March in cold blood on April 29, 2002, and then quickly escaped to Mexico. Garcia was a meth dealer who had been deported three times and had attempted murder twice previously.

• Reynaldo Elias Rapalo, an illegal alien, was arrested in Little Miami on Sept. 19. After all, the community was anxious to capture the serial rapist who had been eluding law enforcement for a year. Rapalo's victims range in age from an 11-year-old girl to a woman of 79.

About 80,000 illegal criminal aliens, including convicted murderers, rapists, drug dealers and child molesters who served prison time and were released, are loose on the streets of America, hiding from federal immigration authorities.

The United States has removed a record number of 157,281 criminal and other illegal aliens from the United States in fiscal year 2004, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) largest investigative arm.

According to ICE, under a new program specifically targeting criminal and fugitive aliens, nearly 53 percent of those removed were "criminal aliens." ICE removed 82,802 criminal aliens in fiscal year 2004, which ended in October, an increase of 6.6 percent over fiscal year 2003.

OK--so who's paying these runners to do this? Is it under the table?

Good question Junius. So often we totally forget to follow the money.

As my husband pointed out to me today, why the Catholic Church as become so pro illegal immigrant to where they advocate defying the law, it is that their coffers are getting full again with the huge increase of tythings they've received from all their new illegal churchgoers.
