Jan. 21 (Bloomberg) -- Halliburton Co. won a $683 million, three-year contract from Petroleos Mexicanos to manage drilling and completion of 58 wells in southern Mexico.

The land wells range in depth from 3,500 meters to 6,500 meters (11,500 feet to 21,300 feet) in depth, Halliburton said today in a statement on its Web site.

The contract work, which begins on Feb. 18, covers wells anywhere in Pemex's southern region, which consists of about 16 oil fields, said Halliburton spokeswoman Melissa Norcross in an e-mail response to questions. The work is not being done in Pemex's Chicontepec field, Norcross said.

The contract follows a project in which Halliburton drilled 33 wells in five of the southern region's fields that was completed in 2006, Norcross said.

Halliburton will use an ``alliance approach'' to work with Pemex and third-party suppliers to drill the wells, according to today's statement. The ``challenging drilling situations'' involving ``complex geologies and tremendous depths'' will require the use of wellbore-cementing tools, stimulation equipment and wireline technology, drilling fluids, drill bits, and directional drilling services and completion tools, Halliburton said.

Pemex will pay $500.7 of the contract in dollars and the rest in pesos, Pemex said in an e-mailed statement.

In August, Pemex awarded a $1.4 billion drilling service contract to a group led by ICA Fluor, a joint venture between Mexico's Empresas ICA SAB and Irving, Texas-based Fluor Corp. The four-year contract was for drilling wells and providing infrastructure in Pemex's Chicontepec field.

If so, I cannot think of a greater conflict of interest than doing business with a country that is invading us and you are in charge of our defense.

Publicly . . no. The majority non-military personnel in Iraq are employees contracted through Halliburton . . . do you have to ask?

This is just another sign of the coming North American Union.
