Hamblen County trying to deal with educating migrant kids

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. Hamblen County Commission members are pondering a couple of measures on immigration.

The commission's finance committee approved a 60-thousand-dollar one-time contribution to the schools to help create an international center to help immigrant children learn English.

The public service committee passed a nonbinding resolution to bill the federal government more than four (m) million dollars -- money to reimburse what officials say the local government has spent to educate the children of undocumented immigrants.

Hamblen County's immigrant population continues to grow. Data from the Tennessee Migrant Education Program shows the number of migrant children in the county increased from 14 in 1995 to 827 this year.

Both issues will be before the full commission on October 20th.
