Harvard must help its student at risk

In a surprising case of immigration policy affecting Harvard, Nur Munir, a candidate for a master’s degree at the Harvard Divinity School, is now in York County Prison in Pennsylvania awaiting deportation. After facilitating the downfall of Indonesian President Suharto in 1998, Munir feared persecution from Suharto’s military supporters and fled to America. However, his application for asylum was denied, appealed, and finally denied again on March 18, 2009, by the Third Circuit. Regardless of the validity of his asylum claims—Munir was found to have credible subjective but not objective fears of persecution—it is unreasonable that Munir be forced to leave America and family before finishing his studies.

Munir has applied for deferred action so that he can finish his degree at Harvard, and this is where the University can play an important role in protecting one of its students from deportation. Harvard has one of the strongest support networks for international students. But the Harvard International Office—supposedly dedicated to helping students like Munir navigate the byzantine bureaucracy of the American immigration system—has shown a deplorable lack of involvement in his case.

While the HIO bends over backward to ensure that international students have the appropriate visas to join the ranks of Wall Street financiers, it seems to have left this student at the Divinity School in the cold. Munir’s case ought to be just as compelling as that of an international student who needs to file an I-20 extension with United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). The HIO should use all of its considerable resources, connections, and expertise in immigration law to help Munir. It is ironic that we have a “scholars-at-riskâ€

Oh sure! Everyone stop what they're doing and help an illegal alien stay in our country taking up a seat at Harvard no less. Send him home and put an American in that seat for crying' out loud!!

They're appealing to the administration of Harvard to appeal to the US government which means they're appealing to the people of the United States to let someone who is in our country illegally to remain here which means we have to stop what we're doing to deal with it when we shouldn't have to, there should be an American or a legal resident in that spot at Harvard, the Harvard Crimson should be complaining about the food in the cafeteria, not whining for an illegal alien to remain in our country, Harvard administrators should be focused on the education of their legal student body, the US government should have already deported this person, and we should be talking about fixing our economy or watching a good movie or getting some sleep.

There is no end to the price Americans are paying because of these people in our country illegally, the universities and employers who have aided and abetted them, the advocacy groups many of them originating from our college campuses whining on their behalf, and the stupid politicians who pay them more heed than the Americans paying for all of it.

Well, it's true, you know!! All these boom-bahs wailing about some dude from Indonesia getting to complete his studies at Harvard and we've got tens of thousands of 4.0 pluses who can't even get into the University of North Carolina or the University of Virginia or the University of Texas or the University of California or the University of Chicago, let alone Harvard, because ... there aren't enough seats!

Get all these people out of our universities and colleges and put Americans in those seats! Wake Up America, this is your future, this is your children's chance to get ahead in our country, to learn and get the good paying jobs, with the good benefits, our American Kids, who will always invent the cool stuff, always build it right, always do the right thing, always serve our best interest with the knowledge we helped them to gain at college, and make the world a better place starting at home with the United States of America.

Wake Up America! We are not here to feed and educate the world. The very purpose of the United States is to show the world how to feed and educate itself by feeding and educating ourselves successfully.
