Oklahoma attorney to help push for federal immigration reform

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City immigration attorney Doug Stump has been elected secretary of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Stump will work with U.S. business leaders and politicians in pushing for comprehensive immigration reform.

Stump is a vocal critic of Oklahoma's House Bill 1804, which is considered 1 of the nation's toughest anti-illegal immigration laws.

Stump says state governments don't need to be meddling in the issue. Instead, citizens need to be bringing pressure on Congress to provide immigration reform.

Stump's motivation for running for office stem from his Oklahoma experiences, assisting businesses and other immigration lawyers in addressing proposed legislation similar to HB 1804.

1 of his primary goals, he says, will be to ensure other legislators do not mimic the Oklahoma statute.
