Report: Hate crimes hit 5-year high in LA County

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hate crimes in Los Angeles County soared last year to their highest mark in five years even as overall crime dropped across the region, according to a report obtained by The Associated Press.
The annual report, to be published Thursday by the county's human relations commission, shows 763 hate crimes were reported in 2007, a 28 percent increase from 2006.
The numbers buck last year's overall crime trends, which saw a decrease of 6 percent in Los Angeles County and 5 percent in the city of Los Angeles, the report notes.

The most common hate crimes were those motivated by race, with 310 committed against black people and 125 against Latinos. However, crimes in which anti-immigrant slurs were used dropped slightly.

Civil rights attorney Connie Rice, who had not seen the report, said it is important to remember that hate crimes represent only a tiny percentage of overall crime numbers. She said the increase is likely a reflection of economic times.

"When economic times gets tighter, hate crime violence goes up," she said, adding that child abuse and domestic violence often increase for the same reason.

Gangs are a factor in many hate crimes. In all, 16 percent of hate crimes last year were committed by gang members. According to the report, gang members committed 120 hate crimes last year, an increase of 14 percent from 2006.

The extent to which race is driving the area's gang crisis is a subject of ongoing debate. Sheriff Lee Baca has said he considers it a major factor, while Los Angeles police Chief William Bratton and other officials downplay suggestions of racial tension.

The report notes that friction between black and Latino residents continues to be a major instigator of hate crimes. There were 116 hate crimes unrelated to gangs that were committed by Latinos against blacks and 26 such crimes committed by blacks against Latinos.

The report states that white supremacist activity continues to be "surprisingly high," with 131 hate crimes showing evidence of being committed by white racists.


According to the U.S. Justice Department, for every hate crime that is reported to police, as many as 28 are not reported, often for fear of retaliation or concerns about talking to authorities.

The Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations has compiled an annual hate crimes report since 1980.

Seems like their may be a different standard being applied based upon one's race...

Isn't it interesting that hate crimes only flow from white towards black and Hispanic, from blacks towards Hispanics, and from Hispanic towards Blacks?

Such a relief to know that I never will have to worry about anyone ever attacking me because of my ethnicity.

I guess they do not keep records on the number of whites who were attacked based upon the color of their skin! Where are those numbers?

If a black person shoots a Hispanic because of race or a Hispanic shoots a black person because of race, that is called "gang related" They do that so that racism among minority ethnic groups appear immune from the phenomena of being racist.

If a black or Hispanic person commits a hate crime against a Caucasian, that is called a "media black out" (See NC illegal alien gang rapes)

If a Caucasian commits a crime of any kind against a person in an ethnic minority, that is called a "National News Story" (See Duke LaCross false story and Don Imus)

We have to be very careful about how we talk about this because to even complain of unfair treatment and the rampant double standards could get us all branded as Hitler or David Duke.

In fact, we are not supposed to even think about such things much less discuss them.

I love many people that are black and Hispanic and I hope they don't mind me pointing out the glowering inequalities in this "report" as expressed by the media.

Ahhh...I see! Thank you W for pointing out those nuances!

Whites are not suppose to see color, remember that fact; but all other races can see any color they want too...

If a white girl from Georgia gets killed it is she was in the wrong place.

If a white boy from North Carolina gets killed he was a white supremacist.

Just maybe someone hated the color "white" of both girl and boy above.

When will hate crimes against whites be noticed, too?

The School System Training has not fooled everyone.

The whole problem with the "Hate Crimes" statistics is that it does not include crimes against whites by blacks and Latinos.

Anyone can kill or beat a white person without being charged with a "hate crime'.

Good point, NoBueno.

WE are the 'white racist Supremacists' referred to above! Counter-protesting and anti-illegal immigration activism must be considered to be a 'hate crime' in their mind. For the life of me, I can't think of ANY 'hate crimes' perpetrated by whites on either Mexicans or blacks...with the exception of inside the prison walls. We have a few Ayrian skin heads running around, but they are far and few between...at least here in L.A.

What no one wants to talk about is the extreme racial hatred that Mexicans have toward Blacks! I was researching the ethnic demographics of Mexico the other day, and believe it or not...Mexico has a ZERO black population!

It's not difficult to connect the dots...with the huge increase of IA's in this country, there is also a huge rise in 'hate' crimes perpetrated by Mexicans against blacks! Their prejudices and 'hate' for blacks is ingrained in their DNA. They're not leaving that 'hate' in Mexico...they're bringing it with them!

And, of course, Mexican hate crimes against Whites are never reported! The media ALWAYS discloses the race or last name of a suspect if they are white or black...but never the identity of an hispanic. They are the protected species.

I found it interesting that the L.A. Times NEVER did a story about the horrific Bologna murders in San Francisco! There was one tiny blurb in the last section about a 'road rage' killing...and that was it!
