Havasu council to take final vote on immigration ordinance

. LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (AP) -- A proposed ordinance that would require businesses doing work for the city to sign affidavits saying they don't hire illegal immigrants is scheduled to get a final vote on Tuesday.

The law got a preliminary OK last month, and a yes vote on Tuesday would start the clock ticking for the ordinance to take effect.

City ordinances usually take effect 30 days after final passage, but the proposed immigration law allows for a 90-day education period for employers.

Under the law, employers must submit an affidavit saying they are obeying the law, and maintain proper forms showing employees' eligibility to work in the U.S. Violators could face fines up to $2,500 for the first offense and/or six months in jail.

A similar step was taken in late 2005 by Gov. Janet Napolitano, who signed an executive order saying state contractors had to guarantee their employees aren't illegal immigrants.

Even though federal law prohibits businesses from hiring illegal immigrants, thousands of foreign workers sneak into the United States each year to earn higher wages in construction, agricultural and service-industry businesses.

That there even needs to be a proposal, or even a vote is unbelievable!
