Jobs Open After Immigration Raid
Jobs Open After Immigration Raid
By Bianca Vazquez Toness
One of the military items produced at Michael Bianco, Inc. in New Bedford
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - March 16, 2007 - Many civic leaders in New Bedford, including the Mayor, had never heard of Michael Bianco Incorporated before federal authorities raided that factory last week.
Immigration authorities detained 361 allegedly illegal immigrants working there and arrested the owner and three managers. The US Attorney prosecuting the case has compared the factory with a 19th century sweatshop.
Meanwhile, WBUR's Bianca Vazquez Toness reports that the news about the factory has opened up opportunities for job seekers in New Bedford.
The audio for this story will be available on WBUR's web site after 10 a.m. on Friday.
