Arizona legislators to examine immigration rhetoric

PHOENIX Democratic state legislators have scheduled a special meeting tomorrow.

They want to examine the impact of their rhetoric on the immigration debate and to urge state leaders to tone it down.

The meeting comes after Democratic state Representative Kyrsten Sinema and Republican House member Bill Konopnicki received threats linked to their actions on legislation dealing with illegal immigration.

Sinema sponsored a bill to ban civilian patrols to help enforce immigration laws in Arizona. Konopnicki voted against a bill that would have denied worker's compensation benefits to illegal immigrants because he believed it would have opened employers to lawsuits.

House Democratic leader Phil Lopes, who helped organize tomorrow's forum, said he believes some politicians fueled the anger over the issue.
