SAN YSIDRO, Calif. - Jan. 11, 2006 (UPI) -- A hidden tunnel running from Mexico to the United States was discovered after the asphalt it ran under collapsed.

Authorities from both countries are investigating the 35-foot long, 3-foot by 3-foot tunnel, just west of the San Ysidro, Calif., entry, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The U.S. side of the tunnel has been closed with metal strips and sandbags. The tunnel ended in an unused area near a parking lot.

Mexican officials would not comment on it, but a border agent speaking on the condition of anonymity said it was in a rarely used piece of land there too.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are looking into the tunnel.

No one has been arrested and immigration spokeswoman Lauren Mack said its purpose wasn't clear.

Previous tunnels were found to be paths for drug or human smuggling.
