Nashville considers banning taco trucks, food wagons

NASHVILLE, Tenn. Leaders of Nashville, Tennessee, are considering a measure to ban all taco trucks and other mobile food wagons because of health concerns.

The proposal is scheduled for debate tomorrow at the Metropolitan Council meeting.

Critics say the proposed ban has more to do with cultural differences than any real health threat posed by the mobile vendors.

Many are stationed on busy streets in Nashville's immigrant neighborhoods.

Nashville is one of several cities with fast-growing Hispanic populations that recently have tried to restrict food trucks.

Some Hispanics food truck operators in North Carolina, California, Texas, Arizona and Washington state say they have been unfairly targeted for enforcement.

If approved, the plan would allow for mobile food vendors at temporary special events and would not apply to street vendors -- such as smaller hot dog carts.
