There are 120 officially declared and de facto sanctuary cities in the United States of America. There are at least two states in the U.S. whose governors have signed official proclamations declaring the entire state a sanctuary zone for illegal aliens. These states are Maine and Oregon. Furthermore, the entire Washington D.C. area, the capital of our nation, provides sanctuary for illegal aliens.

All across the United States local officials have adopted misguided policies ensuring that their local police will not inquire or act upon information regarding the immigration status of anyone they apprehend. The direct result of these policies is that, every year countless convicted criminals who have entered this nation illegally before being arrested and convicted of crimes ranging from cold blooded murder to the rape of young children, are released onto the streets of America where they are free to pursue other innocent victims instead of being handed over to the immigration authorities so they can be deported to wherever they came from originally.

There is no legal basis for the sanctuary policies adopted either at a state or local level anywhere in the United States, and in 1998 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the criminal convictions of sanctuary workers for violating U.S. immigration laws prohibiting the concealment, harboring, shielding or transport of illegal aliens in the United States (USA v. Aquilar). However, the are 120 cities in the U.S. where public officials have, for one reason or another, decided to grant sanctuary to the illegal aliens living in their community, more often than not, to the detriment of the American citizens living in those communities who, more often than not, become the innocent victims of the violent criminals that sanctuary laws are designed to protect.

The state of New Jersey has a relatively low Hispanic population in comparison to other states and yet they have gone out of their way to welcome illegal aliens by allowing numerous sanctuary cities within their borders. Bridgeton, Camden, Fort Lee, Hightstown, Jersey City, Newark, North Bergen, Trenton, Union City and West New York all offer sanctuary to illegal aliens looking for a safe haven, but while this may work out well for the illegal aliens it is not the safest public policy for the American citizens living there. Jersey City has a murder rate that is three times the national average, the murder rate in Trenton is six times the national average, Camden’s murder rate is nearly seven times the national average and Newark which averages around six times the national average was recently the focus of national coverage when Jose Carranza, an illegal alien from Peru and at least five other accomplices forced Terrance Aeriel, 18; Natasha Aeriel, 19, Dashon Harvey, 20, and Iofemi Hightower, 20 to kneel against a wall before shooting them in the head execution style. Natasha Aeriel was the sole survivor of the brutal attack. Jose Carranza, the illegal alien from Peru was arrested in October 2006 following a bar fight and in January 2007 on aggravated sexual assault charges for 31 counts of rape against a 5-year-old girl and threats to murder her parents if they testified against him. Because of Newark’s sanctuary policy which bars local police from seeking and sharing information about a suspect’s immigration status, Jose Carranza was allowed to remain in the United States despite the horrendous charges against him. In fact, if the New Jersey officials had of investigated Carranza’s immigration status instead of being so overly concerned about his rights as a possible illegal alien, the federal authorities would have put a stop to any attempt to release him on bail and three young people would still be alive today.

Houston is just one of fourteen cities in the state of Texas that has proclaimed itself a sanctuary city for illegal aliens. The murder rate in Houston is three time the national average, a distinction it shares with Dallas, Texas another sanctuary city. Fort Worth, Laredo, McAllen and San Antonio, four of the other sanctuary cities in Texas, are all above the national average for murders committed. Houston was rewarded for their sympathetic attitude towards illegal aliens in September 2006 when Juan Leonardo Qunitero, an illegal alien previously deported for raping a 12 year old girl, shot to death Rodney Johnson, a 12-year veteran on the Houston police force and a married father of five children.

Los Angeles, California could be considered the illegal alien capital of the United States. It may have been one of the first sanctuary cities in the nation and the city’s friendly welcoming attitude toward illegal aliens has helped to keep the area’s murder rate well above the national average for decades. It has been estimated that more than 90% of all homicides committed in Los Angeles are committed by illegal aliens. The city is inundated with a wide variety of street gangs like the 18th Street Gang whose membership is approximately 60% illegal aliens and the Columbia Lil’ Cycos gang that controls the drug market around L.A.’s MacArthur Park through murder and racketeering has a majority of illegal aliens as members. The 18th Street Gang smuggles illegal aliens into Los Angeles country and allows them to work off the cost by selling drugs on the streets of LA. Los Angeles, California is an illegal alien Disneyland and consequently it is also a virtual cesspool of criminal activity where the people who live there literally put their lives at risk just walking to the corner market. San Bernardino, another California sanctuary city has a murder rate that is five times the national average.

No discussion of sanctuary cities would be complete without mentioning New York City. In 1996 when the federal government decreed that cities could not prohibit their employees from cooperating with the Immigration and Naturalization Services, the former mayor, Rudolph Giuliani stated that the sole purpose of the INS was to “terrorize people,â€
