Hispanic Caucus Demands ICE Meeting on Deportations
Saturday, February 11, 2017 06:41 PM
By: Todd Beamon
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus has demanded a meeting with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials after raids across the country netted hundreds of illegal immigrants.
"These raids have struck fear in the hearts of the immigrant community as many fear that President Trump’s promised 'deportation force' is now in full-swing," the caucus said in a letter Friday to ICE acting director Thomas Homan, Politico reports.
The letter was signed by the organization's chair, California Democratic Rep. Michelle Lujan Grisham, as well as these other party members: Reps. John Conyers of Michigan; Luis Gutierrez of Illinois; along with Reps. Zoe Lofgren, Judy Chu and Lucille Roybal-Allard, all of California.
Agency officials said Saturday that 160 illegals were arrested over five days in Southern California and as many as 200 were seized in Georgia and the Carolinas, according to news reports.
Department of Homeland Security officials said that the round-ups were "routine," in light of President Donald Trump's Jan. 25 immigration executive order.
The caucus said it needed to meet with Homan "immediately to discuss the impact these raids have had on our communities as well as obtain clarifying guidance on how ICE policies will differ from the last administration," Politico reports.
"It is critical that our constituents have clarity on ICE operations and we request a copy of this memo," the letter said. "Without this guidance, our communities will be paralyzed as students will remain home from school, parents will be afraid to leave children alone and our local economies will be irreparably damaged."
