NUEVO LEON, Mexico — Having just been given approval the night before to begin driving trucks into the United States from Mexico, Fernando Paez, owner of Transportes Olympic, said Sept. 7 that “the first step is to comply and run as safe of an operation as U.S. companies run.â€

Fernando Paez owns Transportes Olympic, which on Thursday, Sept. 6, became the first Mexican carrier to receive authority from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to operate in the United States under the agency's new pilot program.

Forty-year-old Fernando Paez was both excited and a little nervous Friday afternoon as one of his drivers prepared to cross the border with a load headed for North Carolina. Paez is owner of Nuevo Leon, Mexico-based Transportes Olympic -- the first Mexican carrier authorized to operate in in the United States beyond the so-called commercial zone as part of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s new pilot program.
