VICTORVILLE • Three men who were tied up, kidnapped and shot near Highway 395 last June were part of a Mexican drug cartel and were shot by members of a rival cartel, according to court testimony Thursday.
Luis Romero, Alejandro Martin and Eduardo Gomez were bound and blindfolded at an apartment in South Gate. The assailants asked them for money and drugs, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Vaccari testified during a preliminary hearing on Thursday.
The three were then driven to Victorville where they were shot multiple times in the back seat of Gomez’ truck, Vaccari testified.
Romero told Vaccari that he pretended to be dead before he slipped out of plastic ties and went for help, according to Vaccari.
A passerby found Romero critically wounded and covered with blood near the intersection of Highway 395 and Eucalyptus Street on June 23.
The five defendants are Eduardo Gomez Alvarado, 22, Cesar Roberto Rodriguez, 24, Edgar Ivan Chavez Navarro, 25, Sabras Iniguez, 21, and Jose Luis Perez, 22, all of South Los Angeles.
Sheriff ’s Detective Steve Pennington said that the victims were members of a Mexican drug cartel, and Alvarado, Rodriguez and Navarro belonged to another.
They are charged with murder, attempted murder, kidnapping to commit robbery and participation in criminal street gang. They can face several life terms if convicted, Deputy Public Defender David Sanders said.
The preliminary hearing is expected to continue on May 20.
