    Take Our Jobs

Someone put this link on in the comments section of the Miami Herald regarding an article about anchor babies. I never seen it or heard of it before.

    http://takeourjobs.org/

    TAKE OUR JOBS

There are two issues facing our nation--high unemployment and undocumented people in the workforce--that many Americans believe are related.

Missing from the debate on both issues is an honest recognition that the food we all eat - at home, in restaurants and workplace cafeterias (including those in the Capitol) - comes to us from the labor of undocumented farm workers.

Agriculture in the United States is dependent on an immigrant workforce. Three-quarters of all crop workers working in American agriculture were born outside the United States. According to government statistics, since the late 1990s, at least 50% of the crop workers have not been authorized to work legally in the United States.

We are a nation in denial about our food supply. As a result the UFW has initiated the "Take Our Jobs" campaign.

Farm workers are ready to train citizens and legal residents who wish to replace them in the field, we will use our knowledge and staff to help connect the unemployed with farm employers. Just fill out the form to the right and continue on to the request for job application.

I want to be a farm worker:

    First Name: Last Name:
    E-mail: Zip Code:

** Job may include using hand tools such as knives, hoes, shovels, etc. Duties may include tilling the soil, transplanting, weeding, thinning, picking, cutting, sorting & packing of harvested produce. May set up & operate irrigation equip. Work is performed outside in all weather conditions (Summertime 90+ degree weather) & is physically demanding requiring workers to bend, stoop, lift & carry up to 50 lbs on a regular basis.

I did not fill out the form, but I sent them the following email. Interesting how nowhere on the site do they tell you HOW MUCH THE WAGES ARE.

Here is the email I sent them and I am waiting for their reply:

    Dear UFW:

I would like to know how much the jobs are paying and the location of the job. Are there jobs in California? If not I can relocate, but I would prefer to work in California. I have not done farm work in many years, but I did pick cherries in High School. If the job pays a livable wage, I would like to apply for it.

    Thank you,

    We Should be

We should be picking our own food. It should be a good way for young people to get some excercise, make some money (lightly taxed) and some education tuition credit $$$. Farms can make some nice campsights with little apartments to put em up for a bit...

First of all, this is nothing more than a publicity stunt since less than 1% of the illegal invaders in this country work in agriculture! The farm workers are not the problem per se. If this was only about “farm workers,â€

I did this in High School. It really is not that hard. Oh it is tiring, but hey, its a job. Many would do it if they could make a living doing it. And by making a living I dont mean living in a tent with 20 people.

I am in my sixties and when I was young, a bunch of us kids went during the summer and picked in the fields. Kids use to mow lawns for money, they worked at McDonalds etc. Now they have all been taken over by Mexicans who can't speak English. Americans WILL work the fields, they just have to get use the fact that the farmers will hire AMERICANS.

You have made an excellent point. Job hunting is time consuming. No one wants to waste time applying for jobs that they know they will not be hired for due to discrimination. Especially if they know those jobs wont put food on the table and pay for rent/mortgage. We are use to these types of jobs being only for hispanics with hispanic hiring managers.

Anyone remember McCain's tactic during the run for Bush's 2nd term?

He flat out told the audience of Americans he was suppose to be campaigning to, when they brought up his stand about illegal aliens he told them that YOU CAN'T do the jobs they do, then followed up that he would pay anyone $50./hour if they would work alongside the illegal aliens for the whole season.

IMMEDIATELY a guy raised his hand and called McCain on his proposal that was more like a back stab against Americans.

McCain sure talks sweet and low now, don't he?

He didn't cut and run like a lot of others out of the Senate, or Congress, no he's staying around.

I like his talk against illegal aliens, but he's spend many more years speaking on their behalf.

Not just that, he's insulted Americans to their face about his stand for illegal aliens.

I don't know, he seems nice enough now, but he still hedges on amnesty AFTER the fence.

Truth is Americans don't want amnesty EVER and people keep saying we do, but they're as disconnected as Washington is from regular folks.

They think because they say it, that it makes it right, but it don't.

I picked strawberries and raspberries while in high school. It was actually easier to pick strawberries. I know many of the farms used to have pick your own which was cheaper and you got riper produce.
