A homeless man who police said attempted to steal rolls from a Freeport convenience store and threw hot noodle soup on an employee who tried to stop him remained in jail Friday night.

Investigators planned to check with immigration officials for a more detailed history of Carlos Salvador, 28, a Guatemalan citizen, police said.

Salvador attempted to steal rolls from the store at 21 E. Sunrise Hwy. at around 12:50 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, police said.

The employee who tried to stop Salvador suffered first-degree burns on her back and shoulders from the soup but managed to chase him down after he attempted to flee, police said. The woman held Salvador until Freeport police arrived. She declined medical attention.

Salvador was charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and misdemeanor false impersonation -- for giving police a false name, police said.

According to police, Salvador, who in First District Court in Hempstead was described as a non-citizen, has had four prior incidents, including drunken driving and larceny charges.

In 2005, he spent 15 days in jail for stealing a $200 bicycle, according to court documents.

Salvador, who works in construction, refused to give police a valid address and in court documents has several different birth dates.

"We'll send notification to ICE to see if there any hits on his fingerprints," said Det. Sgt. Anthony Repalone, referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Immigration officials could not be reached.

    Salvador's bond is $50,000.

This is a great example of why ICE must step up the deporation process. All illegals will not self-deport when jobs become unavailable. How could this illegal return to Guatemalan - he didn't even have enough change to buy a roll. Enforce the laws and many will self-deport, however, some are going to need a shove.

The headline in the Oregonian, the Portland newspaper/bird cage liner, read "Homeless Man Steals Bread".

    Talk about liberal bias!

    Absolutely!!!

Although I am not sure he stole because he didn't have the money - could be.

I haven't had any experience with the men stealing, but have had lots of experience with the women stealing and teaching their kids to steal - and not because they didn't have money. It was a constant battle -

I used to help liquidate estates, and at least 50% of the women would try to steal - from actually taking things, to teaching the kids to steal them and run to the car to switching price tags on items.

It was a constant battle --
