A man who was beaten to death on the South Side has been identified as a 54-year-old homeless military veteran, police said Thursday.
Jerry Wayne “Gizmo” Walding was found dead behind a hardware store at 2185 E. Irvington Road, near South Campbell Avenue, on Tuesday.
Detectives have finished their homicide investigation, but need the public’s help to find the victim’s family, police said. Walding is believed to be from Texas but had been living at various locations in Tucson for about 14 years, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Walding had a dispute with Tranquilino Hernandez, 23, that morning, Robinson said. A second confrontation turned physical just before noon.
Hernandez hit Walding with a large rock, causing head injuries that led to his death, Robinson said. Police would not say what the fight concerned.
Hernandez, a Mexico citizen, was arrested soon after the fight, in a wash near South Campbell Avenue and East Benson Highway. He was booked into the Pima County jail on one count of second-degree murder. His bond is $250,000.

Many, but not all, of the homeless are mentally ill and/or have dependencies upon drugs, alcohol etc.

The homeless originate from all parts of society.

Sadly, too many of the homeless are little kids and their mom, trying to get by after leaving abusive living situations, abandoned by a male, divorced with no alimony or child support paid... a whole lotta' reasons.

What doesn't help the homeless is the low minimum wage, wages driven down by an excess labor supply (millions of illegals seeking work) and millions of illegals competing for affordable housing that drives up rental costs.

We can pay billions to prop up foreign countries but our elite class ignores little kids living in cars..... or worse.

When Ronald Reagen was governor of California he boasted of controlling the budget. One method was closing many treatment centers where mentally ill folks lived. He tossed them on the streets where the cost of tending the mentally ill became HIGHER as law enforcement and the judicial system was used to care for the mentally ill. Also, street crime rates increased as shown by statitics. The cities became more dangerous as those who were once kept in facilities roamed the streets. Not all mentally ill are violent but the increase in violent "stranger crime" on the street could not be ignored.

many Vietnam veterans became alcholics after returning from war. They did what their country asked of them and when they returned they were spit on. Regardless of whether you agree with the war, you can have respect for those that served their country - draft dodgers were treated with more respect

This is how our government treats it's own.

Same with the 911 survivors. Many are having serious health issues, and they say the Government won't pay one dime to help them with their medical bills

But we will pay $50,000,000,000 a year for a bunch of illegals to invade our country!

That is what I have been saying for years let us take care of all of our own before we can even think about helping other countries. We have enough poor, elderly, veterans etc to help out that are american citizens nevermind these illegal criminals.

I saw where rescue personnel actually have the DNA of those lost. They are suffering from respiratory problems, but they have been forgotten by their government. The VICTIMS of Hurricane Katrina still have no electricity and running water -- they have no place to lay their heads and have been forgotten by their government who is more concerned about legalizing illegal aliens.
