Honduras' Service Center for Returned Migrants (CAMR) on Friday reported that 22,500 Honduran nationals lacking legal immigration papers haven been deported from the United States since January. These individuals were returned by air transport. Approximately 22,000 additional Hondurans were deported by land and sea from Mexico and Guatemala, for a total of 44,500 deportees during the past 12 months -- 90 percent of whom were men and 10 percent women. Most of the men were between the ages of 25 and 54 years old. During the past 10 years, more than 202,000 Hondurans have been deported by air from the US and about 327,800 by land and sea from Mexico and Guatemala. More than 46,000 Hondurans were deported from the US in 2010, compared to 25,101 in 2009, 30,018 in 2008, and 29,348 in 2007.

According to Honduras' Commissioner for Human Rights, approximately 500 Hondurans emigrate daily to the US, mostly traveling through Guatemala and Mexico. There are some 1 million Hondurans residing in the US -- 70 percent of whom the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency believes to be undocumented. Some 65,000 Hondurans in the US are living under Temporary Protection Status (TPS). The money, or "remittances", sent by these individuals to their families in Honduras represents the primary revenue generator within the Honduran economy. Remittances to Honduras is estimated at more than US$3.2 billion annually.
